US gasoline prices hit an all-time high on Monday, hitting a record high of $2.19 per gallon in New York.
Gasoline was also selling well in California, where the average price hit $3.06 per gallon, according to AAA.US President Donald Trump had called on Americans to “get gas” in a statement to supporters ahead of Monday’s rally.
“This morning, I said that we will be bringing back gas prices to the level of 2005 and that we are going to get back to the days of great gas,” Trump said in the speech.
“Gasoline is the only thing that makes America great.
I’m going to bring back gas at a time that makes us great again.”
The rally comes after President Trump last week called on the US to “stop subsidising the Chinese”.
The president also said the US needed to import gasoline from the European Union to avoid an economic “disaster”.
The US has become the world’s biggest gas importer and a big consumer of the oil, with the US importing about 8% of global gas supplies in 2015.
